यह पहली बार ही होगा जब किसी भारतीय को यूनाइटेड नेशन्स मिलिट्री जेंडर एडव्होकेट अवॉर्ड से नवाजा जाएगा। इस खास सम्मान को हासिल करने वाली भारतीय हैं- मेजर सुमन गवानी। मेजर सुमन इस अवॉर्ड को ब्राजीली नेवी ऑफिसर कार्ला मोंटेरियो दी कास्त्रो अराउजो के साथ साझा करेंगी। यूएन महासचिव एंटोनियो गुतरेज यूएन पीसकीपर्स डे(29 मई) के मौके पर यानी आज एक वर्चुअल समारोह के दौरान इन दोनों महिला अफसरों को सम्मानित करेंगे।
मेजर सुमन को यह अवॉर्ड यूएन के यौन-हिंसा विरोधी अभियान में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान के लिए दिया जा रहा है। मेजर सुमन एक मिलिट्री ऑब्जर्वर हैं, जो एक यूएन मिशन के तहत दक्षिणी सुडान में तैनात थीं। अपनी सेवा के दौरान मेजर सुमन ने यौन हिंसा से जुड़े मामलों पर निगरानी रखने वाली 230 महिला यूएन मिलिट्री ऑब्जर्वर को ट्रेनिंग दी।
उन्होंने दक्षिणी सुडान में सभी यूएन मिशन साइट्स पर महिला यूएन मिलिट्री ऑब्जर्वर की तैनाती भी सुनिश्चित की। मेजर सुमन ने यौन हिंसा से जुडे़ मामलों को कंट्रोल करने के लिए दक्षिणसुडान की सेनाओं को भी ट्रेन किया।

मेजर सुमन उत्तराखंड के टेहरी गढ़वाल से हैं
मेजर सुमन उत्तराखंड के टेहरी गढ़वाल के पोखर गांव की रहने वाली हैं। उनकी स्कूली शिक्षा उत्तरकाशी में हुई। देहरादून के गवर्मेंट पीजी कॉलेज से उन्होंने बैचलर ऑफ एजूकेशन की डिग्री ली। मिलिट्री कॉलेज ऑफ टेलिकम्यूनिकेशन इंजीनियरिंग, महू (मध्य प्रदेश) से उन्होंने टेलिकम्यूनिकेशन की डिग्री भी हासिल की है। मेजर सुमन ने साल 2011 में ऑफिसर्स ट्रेनिंग अकेडमी, चेन्नई से ग्रेजुएट होने के बाद इंडियन आर्मी ज्वॉइन की थी। वे आर्मी की सिग्नल कॉर्प से जुड़ीं थीं।
यूएन के शांति मिशनों में हिस्सा लेने वाला भारत तीसरा सबसे बड़ा देश है
साल 1950 से ही इंडियन आर्मी यूएन के शांति मिशनों में हिस्सा लेती रही है। इंडियन आर्मी के जवान और यूनिट्स यूएन के 49 मिशनों में योगदान दे चुके हैं। करीब 2 लाख से ज्यादा भारतीय सैनिक दुनियाभर में यूएन के अंतर्गत अपनी सेवाएं दे चुके हैं। वर्तमान में यूएन के शांति मिशनों में अपने सैनिक भेजने वाला भारत तीसरा सबसे बड़ा देश है।
ब्राजीली नेवी कमांडर अराउजो ने सेंट्रल अफ्रीकन रिपब्लिक में 'जेंडर रिस्पोंसिव गश्त' बढ़ाने में योगदान दिया
ब्राजीली कमांडर अराउजो, यूएन के एक अन्य मिशन के लिए सेंट्रल अफ्रीकन रिपब्लिक में तैनात थीं। वे यहां 'जेंडर एंड प्रोटेक्शन' पर ट्रेनिंग देती हैं। अराउजो की मेहनत के चलते स्थानीय समुदायों के बीच लिंगभेद और यौन हिंसा को रोकने के लिए हर महीने जो 'जेंडर रिस्पोंसिव गश्त' होती थी, वह 574 से बढ़कर 3000 हो गई। अराउजो को जब सम्मानित होने की खबर मिली तो उनका जवाब था, "मेरे और मेरे मिशन के लिए यह देखना बड़ा संतोषजनक है कि हमने जो काम शुरू किए थे, वे अब फल देने लगे हैं।"
पिछले 5 सालों से दिया जा रहा है यूएन मिलिट्री जेंडर एडव्होकेट अवार्ड
यूएन मिलिट्री जेंडर एडव्होकेट अवार्ड की शुरुआत 2016 में हुई थी। वे मिलिट्री पर्सनल जो अपने काम से यूएन सिक्योरिटी रिजॉल्यूशन-1325 के सिद्धांतों को मजबूती देते हैं और आगे बढ़ाते हैं, उन्हें यह सम्मान दिया जाता है। 31 अक्टूबर 2000 में यूएन ने सिक्योरिटी रिजॉल्यूशन-1325 को अपनाया था। इसके मुताबिक, यूएन के सभी शांति प्रयासों, संघर्षों को रोकने और संघर्ष के बाद के पुनर्निर्माण और तनावों की रोकथाम जैसे कार्यक्रमों में महिलाओं की बराबर भागीदारी सुनिश्चित करना है।

72 साल पहले 29 मई 1948 को यूएन का पहला शांति मिशन शुरू हुआ था। अरब-इजरायल युद्ध में सीजफायर के बाद स्थिति को मॉनिटर करने के लिए यूएन सुपरविजन ऑर्गनाइजेशन बनाया गया था। इसी की याद में इंटरनेशनल डे ऑफ यूएन पीसकीपर्स 29 मई को मनाया जाता है। इस दिन हर साल यूएन के शांति मिशनों में काम कर रहे लोगों की मेहनत, साहस और लगन को सम्मान दिया जाता है। यूएन के शांति मिशनों में जान गंवा चुके लोगों को भी याद किया जाता है।
इस साल की थीम है- "शांति मिशनों में महिलाएं ही शांति की कूंजी हैं"
इस साल 1948 से अब तक यूएन के बैनर तले शांति मिशनों में जान गंवा चुके 3900 से ज्यादा शांतिदूतों को श्रद्धांजलि दी जाएगी। इसके साथ ही यूएन महासचिव एंटोनियो गुतरेज वर्तमान में यूएन मिशनों में काम कर रहे 95 हजार शांतिदूतों (पुलिस, मिलिट्री और आम नागरिकों) की सेवाओं के प्रति भी आभार जताएंगे। यूएन हेडक्वार्टर में वर्चुअल समारोह के जरिए ये सब होगा। इस साल की थीम महिलाओं पर आधारित है। इसका कारण है कि यूएन सिक्योरिटी काउंसिल रिजॉल्यूशन-1325 के भी 20 साल पूरे हो गए हैं, जिसका मकसद यूएन मिशनों में महिलाओं की बराबर भागीदारी सुनिश्चित करना था।
26 सालों में शांति मिशनों में महिलाओं की भागीदारी बढ़ी
1993 में यूएन मिशनों में तैनात यूनिफार्म्ड महिलाओं की भागीदारी महज 1% थी। 2019 के 95 हजार शांतिदूतों में मिलिट्री में महिलाओं की भागीदारी 4.7% और पुलिस यूनिट में हिस्सेदारी 10.8% हो गई। 2028 तक इसे 15% और 20% करने का लक्ष्य है।

This will be the first time that an Indian will be awarded the United Nations Military Gender Advocate Award. The Indians who have received this special honor are Major Suman Gawani. Major Suman will share the award with Brazilian Navy officer Carla Monterio di Castro Araújo. UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutrej will honor the two women officers during a virtual ceremony on the occasion of UN Peacekeepers Day (May 29).
Major Suman is being given this award for his significant contribution to the UN's anti-sexual violence campaign. Major Suman is a military observer who was stationed in South Sudan under a UN mission. During his service, Major Suman trained 230 women UN Military Observer monitoring sexual violence related cases.
She also ensured the deployment of the female U.N. Military Observer at all U.N. mission sites in South Sudan. Major Suman also trained the forces of Dakshin Sudan to control cases related to sexual violence.

Major Suman is from Tehri Garhwal in Uttarakhand
Major Suman hails from Pokhar village in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. He did his schooling in Uttarkashi. He received a Bachelor of Education degree from Government PG College, Dehradun. He also holds a Telecommunication degree from the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow (Madhya Pradesh). Major Suman joined the Indian Army in 2011 after graduating from Officers Training Academy, Chennai. She was associated with the Army's Signal Corp.
When Major Suman was informed about this special honor of UN, he said, "Whatever our job, position or rank, as a peacekeeper, it is our duty that we men and women in our work think of everyone And join the perspective equally. India is the third largest country to participate in UN peacekeeping missions.

Brazilian Navy Commander Araujo contributed to increase 'Gender Responsive Patrol' in Central African Republic
Arauzo, a Brazilian commander, was stationed in the Central African Republic for another UN mission. She trains here on 'Gender and Protection'. Due to Araujo's efforts to prevent gender discrimination and sexual violence among local communities, the 'Gender Responsive Patrol' that took place every month increased from 574 to 3000.
